Expectations vs. Reality
Have you ever expected much more out of something than what really came of it?
One of the worst feelings is when you’ve looked forward to something for so long and then it doesn’t live up to what you expected. The same thing goes for people, if you have invested a lot of time into someone and it doesn’t feel like it was worth it, it’s a harsh reality to face.
In Judy Brady’s essay, I Want a Wife, Brady expresses all of the expectations that she would be looking forward to if she indeed did have a wife. A lot of tasks done for her and moments to share. She has very high expectations, but if she did get a wife, would she be disappointed with the outcome? Who’s to say that person would complete all of the outrageous tasks Brady is asking?
The Snowcoming dance was this past weekend, something I’ve been looking forward to for months. It was the one thing that I kept thinking about, counting down the days and expecting so much out of it. However, after a few short hours, it was over and I no longer had anything to look forward to. The thought of the dance got me so excited for all this time, but was it really worth getting all excited for if it wasn’t going to live up to my expectation?
Though an event is not the same as a person, Brady and I had a lot of expectations for what we were looking forward to. I can’t say how Brady’s reality turned out, but mine made me a bit disappointed when I woke up this morning. Expectations can be a lot different than what reality holds.
